There is a common element to all of the group study rooms in McHenry Library: they all have a "3" as the second number. The first number tells you what floor the room is on, and the "3" tells you it's a group room.
**2nd floor exception: 2353 and 2359 are the Library Classrooms, that cannot be booked as group study rooms by students. No exceptions. But at least you can tell immediately with the above metric whether it is an office or not.
So when someone is asking for a room number and they don't know if it's an office, a classroom, or a group study room, listen for the "3" as the second number.
03xx = Media Center (0=ground floor, 3=group study/viewing rooms)
13xx = FITC/Learning Technologies (1=1st floor, 3=instructional studios, not bookable through our system)
23xx = 2nd floor group rooms, but 2353 and 2359 are library classrooms. 2316 and 2351 are the only 2nd floor group study rooms students can book
33xx = 3rd floor group study rooms
43xx = 4th floor group study rooms

McHenry Library wayfinding
Good reminder, from Lee (libstaff message April 30, 2012):
"...we are now directing people to the North Elevator primarily for access to the Mathematics Department offices on the 4th floor AND as the ADA / handicapped access to the 1st floor capacity classrooms or (with the East Elevator) Gnd floor capacity offices.
Otherwise, direct people going to the 1st flr classrooms or the Gnd floor capacity offices via the outside route; out the foyer and around to the right. The North Elevator cannot handle general classroom traffic and the outside route is quicker and more direct (as long as they don't have mobility issues). Similarly, the West Elevator and Stairs are quicker for those trying to get to Education offices on the 3rd floor."

Refilling paper in public copiers
The paper is refilled in all of the public copiers (2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors) by our IT staff and students, not the Campus Copier Program. Report copier service problems to the Campus Copier Program by calling 459-5799.

Copying, printing, and confusion...
There seems to be much confusion about the new staggered copying pricing and codes and signage... so here are a few reminders and some things I didn't know:
-the copiers now do double-sided copying (they didn't before) -- it's referred to as "sidedness" on the signage
-the copiers on 3rd and 4th (only) now do color copying (they didn't before) and it's 25 cents (for everyone)
-the only time a card is now needed is for printing for those who don't have or want to use a CruzID gold account (still need a $1 bill)
-all copying requires logging in to the machines; students use CruzID Gold, all others put cash into the copier kiosk and obtain a login
-the PIN that the signage refers to is the last 4 digits of a student/staff/faculty university ID #
-CruzID Gold account copying is 8 cents per page
-non-CruzID Gold copying (aka guest) is 15 cents per page
-students who don't want to charge their account for whatever reason can use the guest kiosk for copying but they will pay 7 cents more per copy than the student rate of 8 cents
And we do have another flatbed scanner in McHenry on the 2nd floor near the IT/Ref Desk. It's in a computer cubicle near the color printer.
It's not as good for images, but fine for text.
Hope this helps!
Best,
Laura

New group study room system and policies
There is a new group study room reservation system, and it is listed in the same place on the library website.
Here is a link to the new policies page: http://library.ucsc.edu/study-room-policies
Main differences:
-Rooms may be reserved for up to 4 hours at a time.
-15-minute grace period for reservations. If the room is not being used by an eligible group (at least two people) at the end of the grace period, the reservation is forfeited.
-No back-to-back reservations but groups may stay beyond their reserved time if there is no subsequent reservation and there is no other group waiting for a room to open.

Special Collections opening update
At this time Special Collections & Archives is planning to open to the public on the first day of classes, Winter quarter, January 9th, 2012.
Although the reading room will be closed, we will be working in our offices and can be reached by phone or email. While we are closed to the public, we would be happy to let our colleagues in -- so just phone or email, and we'll meet you at the door. Or you can use our newly installed "top secret" library staff door bell. It is by the emergency exit door by the north stairwell. If you can't find it, give me a call (502-7523) and I'll point it out to you. Please don't point it out to non-staff.
Thank you,
Luisa
