Special Collections opening update

At this time Special Collections & Archives is planning to open to the public on the first day of classes, Winter quarter, January 9th, 2012.

Although the reading room will be closed, we will be working in our offices and can be reached by phone or email. While we are closed to the public, we would be happy to let our colleagues in -- so just phone or email, and we'll meet you at the door. Or you can use our newly installed "top secret" library staff door bell. It is by the emergency exit door by the north stairwell. If you can't find it, give me a call (502-7523) and I'll point it out to you. Please don't point it out to non-staff.

Thank you,

Luisa

Ref College/Career books

If patrons happen to ask about Ref books with a location of COLLEGE CAREER, you can find them in the work area next to the 2nd floor kitchen. The books are on a truck being reviewed and SOON the location COLLEGE CAREER will disappear. As it is now, the books are in the catalog with the location COLLEGE CAREER and can't be found unless you're in the know. And now you are.

Good site for unemployment data (cities or states)

Jan and Lucia found this source which might be of use if you are asked for the unemployment rate for states or cities. Link to the site:

Economy at a glance

The "at a glance" feature allows you to click on a state, or drill down to a census designated metro area (we are in Santa Cruz - Watsonville), to see labor force statistics including the unemployment rate. Data is monthly, for the preceding 6 months. June is in there right now.

New Melvyl FAQ

Hi everyone,

Here is a good FAQ about new Melvyl: http://www.cdlib.org/services/d2d/melvyl/Melvyl_FAQ.html. This has been helpful for several faculty questions at the desk. One noted glitch is that you can't (for now anyway) set up a new Worldcat profile while logged in through OCA. So if someone is off campus and wants to set up a profile, they'll need to do that before logging in, or log out and set up the profile, and then log back into OCA. And if asked, the new Melvyl/Worldcat profile does not save information for Request. So each time someone places a Request, they must type in all of their information.

Best,

Laura

New Gifts Coordinator

As of today, June 13, I will be the contact person for gifts to the Library collection (except gifts to Special Collections).

We are changing our procedures regarding the form called "Letter of Gift -- Gifts in Kind" so that these are given out only by me. If you are in charge of a Service Desk, please recycle any copies of that form that you may have.

Our simplified instructions for staff regarding gift materials are:
  • Please refer all questions about possible donations of materials to me.

  • If a patron comes to a service desk with a * small number * of items to donate:
    1. You may accept the gift, and pass it on to me.
    2. Please do not give them a Letter of Gift Form; if they wish one at that time they must speak to me first. If I am not available, they can leave the materials along with their contact information and I will contact them regarding paperwork.
    3. Please do not promise that the materials will be added to the collection. Please do not promise that if materials are NOT added to the collection, they will be returned to them. Materials left with the Library are disposed of in a manner that best benefits the Library.
  • If a patron comes to a service desk with more than a box of materials, please tell them you cannot accept them and try to reach me so that I can evaluate the offered materials.
Best,
Kerry

Early collections move: Oversize and some M's

Hi all,

Some portions of the collection moved early--the oversize collection has
already moved, and the first couple ranges of the M section have moved. If
patrons come to you looking for items in those sections, we can have them
paged. You can reach Hallett movers at either of the following numbers to
have items paged: 9-2929 or 708.259.8979.

Temporary signs are being posted which will direct patrons to the Circulation Desk for assistance in obtaining these items.

Thanks,
Sarah
