Library hours for Fall 2010

Beginning Sept. 23rd, 2010, the hours of both the McHenry and Science & Engineering libraries will be as follows:

Sunday through Thursday - 8:00 a.m. to midnight.
Friday - 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Saturday - 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

New UCSC website

Re: Newly designed campus website

Late this evening, a newly designed campus web home page and related secondary pages, supported by a new content management system, are scheduled to go live. The structure and design of these pages reflect input from academic and staff personnel; students; alumni; and others.

This is part of an ongoing comprehensive web improvement program, commissioned in late 2008 by Chancellor Blumenthal and CPEVC Kliger. Co-led by University Relations and Information Technology Services, this initiative also involves the adoption and implementation of an enterprise-wide system for managing website content, the development of clear guidelines for UCSC web sites, and an updated definition of web services supported centrally by the campus.

These web enhancements are intended to aid efforts to promote UCSC's many strengths and distinctions; recruit students, faculty and staff; increase private financial support; and provide a clear, accessible information portal for faculty, staff, students, and others.

In early September, the Humanities Division, two of its departments, and Porter College sites are scheduled to transition to the new design and architecture within the campus Web Content Management System (WCMS). Other partners in the pilot phase of this project will transition their sites in coming months.

New IT Desk hours for McHenry

Omar let us know that they have a new student assistant who will be trained and on the desk, starting Thursday, August 12th. There is a new schedule also, for Summer Session II: Monday-Thursday, 12:45pm-7:45pm. So today (Tuesday) and tomorrow (Wednesday), there will be no public service coverage.

Call 9-2486 if you need IT Help beyond what we know how to do, or put in a ticket .

New format for My ILL Requests

Hi everyone,

There is a new look to "My ILL Requests" when patrons log in. If they don't click on the small "Show everything" box in the upper left-hand side of the screen, at the top of their list, then they will not see items that have not yet been shipped. So if you are helping anyone in the Ask A Librarian RT or at the desk, keep that in mind if they say none of their requests are displaying (or things are missing) and they've logged in correctly.

Summer Emeriti library research class

Frank and Laura will be having a drop-in library research class for emeriti faculty and staff on Wednesday, August 25th from 2-3:30pm in the McHenry Library Classroom 2353 (2nd floor). They will give an overview of the library's current website and offer tips and strategies for successful online library research. There will be time throughout for questions. This is the second in a series of drop-in classes to support emeriti faculty and staff research needs. No need to sign-up.

ERes notice to faculty

This message has gone out to Faculty and is the first of many communications to faculty instructors about the changes to eres.

To Whom It May Concern:

In order to support the campus’ goal of providing a consistent user experience for the entire campus learning community and eliminate costly duplicative services, the University Library’s Electronic Reserve service will be undergoing several changes over the 2010-2011 academic year.

Beginning Fall 2010, Electronic Reserves (ERes) will be offered through eCommons, UCSC's new Education Commons and Collaborative Learning Environment. Scanning and posting of documents will continue through the fall quarter. Additionally, the Reserves Department will be working closely with instructors to teach them how to directly manage their course materials and resources, in order to prepare for winter and spring service changes.

In Winter 2011, hard-copy material will continue to be scanned and posted in eCommons. The Reserves Department will no longer be posting material that is electronically delivered. The department will continue to work closely with instructors to ensure they have resources available to them to successfully manage their course materials in eCommons.

In Spring 2011, the Reserves Department will no longer post course material. Scanning of hard-copy material will continue, but all documents will be e-mailed to the instructor for posting once they have been scanned. The Reserves Department will offer eCommons referral support during this time.

CDLAlert: UC-eLinks does not appear in PubMed

UC-eLinks buttons are not currently displaying in the PubMed interface.
The National Library of Medicine is aware of the problem and is
currently investigating. Currently, there is no estimate for resolution.

Summer hours for "Library Information Technology Helpdesk"

Library ITS has provided us with the following information regarding summer support hours.

The "Library Information Technology Helpdesk" Summer hours are as follows:

McHenry - Noon to 8:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

S&E - 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday
          9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, Friday

"In case of a vacant helpdesk or for assistance outside of normal hours, please call 459-2486 or email help@ucsc.edu. We will assist you as soon as possible during operating hours."

Gifts and donations

This is a review of how we handle gifts at both library buildings.

Maps and Special Collections accept and process gifts, and gift forms, themselves.

Paul Machlis is the gift coordinator for all other materials. What this means is that staff should refer all questions about possible donations to Paul; he will talk to the person and determine whether we accept the gift or, if not, what other options are available.

The exception is when a patron comes to a service desk with a gift in hand, usually just a few volumes. In this case:

1. You are welcome to accept their gift, which you will pass on to Paul.
2. Please offer them a "Letter of Gift" form to complete, which you will also pass on to Paul. The donor is not required to complete the Letter of Gift form, but must do so if they wish formal acknowledgment which comes from both the Library Office and Campus Gifts Administration.
3. If you do accept such a gift and the donor asks if we will definitely add the item to the collection or if not, can we return the item to them, the answer in both cases is "no." Items that are not needed in our collection are disposed of in various ways.

Access and Reference at both buildings will be replacing old forms with the new form (the McHenry Ref Desk keep them in a drawer beside the Vertical File drawer).

The information regarding codes at the bottom only concerns Paul, Special Collections, and Maps. When he receives a completed gift form, he will complete those sections.

Material type "Music CD" active in CRUZCAT

I have added a new material type (Music CD, code "h") that is now selectable in the webpac. You'll notice that the old COMPACT DISC drop-down menu is gone, as it never functioned properly. Note that the DVD drop-down menu is still there as it works. Currently, Music CD is the last selection on the Material Type drop down menu. If there are no objections, I'm going to leave it as is. If, however, there is a strong desire to reorganize the Material Type list, I will do so. Please let me know if you feel strongly one way or the other Thursday, July 8th.

Forms on internal site

Some forms on internal.library.ucsc.edu may continue to produce errors on submission. Most staff forms have been migrated to Drupal or elsewhere. The software request form, for example, has been superseded by itrequest (help@ucsc.edu). If you do receive an error when trying to use a form on internal.library, please send a ticket to help@ucsc.edu. We will help you find a newer version of the form or meet your need in another way.

Mass Digitization (Google) Project Moved to S&E

On Wednesday, June 16, the last full load of books was shipped from McHenry to be digitized at the Google scan center. These materials will return to the shelves in the first weeks of July. The Mass Digitization Project is now moving to the Science and Engineering Library, where because of the smaller number of eligible materials, it is expected that scanning operations will conclude by the end of fall quarter.

The first shipment of materials to be digitized from the Science & Engineering Library will depart on June 30. Shipments will occur weekly, on Wednesday mornings, and materials will be off the shelves for approximately three weeks. For a few days at the beginning of this period, materials may be off the shelf before their status has been updated in CruzCat (to v:OUT4SCANNING). Likewise, at the end of the three weeks, the status of an item may be updated to reflect that it has returned to the library, but the item itself is waiting to be re-shelved. For this reason, yellow signs will be affixed to areas of the shelves which have been pulled to alert patrons. If you are assisting a patron who is seeking a book that you have reason to believe may be somewhere in the digitization process, please call or email me (ext. 2-7392, mjkramer@ucsc.edu) with identifying information for that book. I will be happy to let you know whether/where the book is in the process, and will arrange to have it brought up to the hold shelf when it returns to the library.

While the process itself can be inconvenient, I hope that the digitization of library materials will ultimately benefit our patrons. Nearly three million books have been scanned from the UC system, and many of those items which are in the public domain are already available for viewing through the HathiTrust or Google Books. CDL is working to make scanned books easily accessible through Next-Generation Melvyl.

McHenry's new iPads

McHenry Library has acquired five 16GB WiFi Apple iPads.

These iPads may be checked out by UCSC students, faculty and staff as four-hour reserve items at the McHenry Library Access Desk.
