Laptops and iPads update
McHenry laptops are now stored are now stored in the same way as the S&E laptops: each bag contains a laptop and charger of the same number, and can be found in the green cabinet behind the Circ Desk. The new bags only zip across the top. We will no longer recharge laptops, but they do come with a charger (that has its own barcode and is checked out also). iPads are also in the same green cabinet, and will be charged (you'll see a powerstrip next to them inside the cabinet).
Tally of Education/Math/HAVC/classrooms directions 9/28-10/9
We have been asked to keep a tally of directions we give to Education, Mathematics, HAVC, and related classrooms from Friday, September 28th through Tuesday, October 9th to assess the effectiveness of new signage. I have placed the tally sheet on a clipboard that will be stowed under the desk on the right-hand side. I will give the stat sheet to Sarah after the 9th. Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Laura

No bikes in the library
Please do not let people bring their bikes into the library, even though it may be for a brief period of time.

Santa Cruz newspaper indexing
While McHenry holds indices for various area newspapers from 1856-1956and the Santa Cruz Public Library additionally has a 1957-8 volumethere are obviously many gaps in indexing not covered by bound volumes, the Sentinel's Web site, or SCPL's Newspaper Clipping File.
None other than Stan Stevens suggests contacting the Genealogical Society of Santa Cruz County (publishers of the existing indices) for those years not obviously indexed, as they continue their work of indexing local newspapers.

Copying, printing, and confusion...
There seems to be much confusion about the new staggered copying pricing and codes and signage... so here are a few reminders and some things I didn't know:
-the copiers now do double-sided copying (they didn't before) -- it's referred to as "sidedness" on the signage
-the copiers on 3rd and 4th (only) now do color copying (they didn't before) and it's 25 cents (for everyone)
-the only time a card is now needed is for printing for those who don't have or want to use a CruzID gold account (still need a $1 bill)
-all copying requires logging in to the machines; students use CruzID Gold, all others put cash into the copier kiosk and obtain a login
-the PIN that the signage refers to is the last 4 digits of a student/staff/faculty university ID #
-CruzID Gold account copying is 8 cents per page
-non-CruzID Gold copying (aka guest) is 15 cents per page
-students who don't want to charge their account for whatever reason can use the guest kiosk for copying but they will pay 7 cents more per copy than the student rate of 8 cents
And we do have another flatbed scanner in McHenry on the 2nd floor near the IT/Ref Desk. It's in a computer cubicle near the color printer.
It's not as good for images, but fine for text.
Hope this helps!
Best,
Laura

New group study room system and policies
There is a new group study room reservation system, and it is listed in the same place on the library website.
Here is a link to the new policies page: http://library.ucsc.edu/study-room-policies
Main differences:
-Rooms may be reserved for up to 4 hours at a time.
-15-minute grace period for reservations. If the room is not being used by an eligible group (at least two people) at the end of the grace period, the reservation is forfeited.
-No back-to-back reservations but groups may stay beyond their reserved time if there is no subsequent reservation and there is no other group waiting for a room to open.

Special Collections opening update
At this time Special Collections & Archives is planning to open to the public on the first day of classes, Winter quarter, January 9th, 2012.
Although the reading room will be closed, we will be working in our offices and can be reached by phone or email. While we are closed to the public, we would be happy to let our colleagues in -- so just phone or email, and we'll meet you at the door. Or you can use our newly installed "top secret" library staff door bell. It is by the emergency exit door by the north stairwell. If you can't find it, give me a call (502-7523) and I'll point it out to you. Please don't point it out to non-staff.
Thank you,
Luisa

Ref College/Career books
If patrons happen to ask about Ref books with a location of COLLEGE CAREER, you can find them in the work area next to the 2nd floor kitchen. The books are on a truck being reviewed and SOON the location COLLEGE CAREER will disappear. As it is now, the books are in the catalog with the location COLLEGE CAREER and can't be found unless you're in the know. And now you are.

Good site for unemployment data (cities or states)
Jan and Lucia found this source which might be of use if you are asked for the unemployment rate for states or cities. Link to the site:
Economy at a glance
The "at a glance" feature allows you to click on a state, or drill down to a census designated metro area (we are in Santa Cruz - Watsonville), to see labor force statistics including the unemployment rate. Data is monthly, for the preceding 6 months. June is in there right now.

New Melvyl FAQ
Hi everyone,
Here is a good FAQ about new Melvyl: http://www.cdlib.org/services/d2d/melvyl/Melvyl_FAQ.html. This has been helpful for several faculty questions at the desk. One noted glitch is that you can't (for now anyway) set up a new Worldcat profile while logged in through OCA. So if someone is off campus and wants to set up a profile, they'll need to do that before logging in, or log out and set up the profile, and then log back into OCA. And if asked, the new Melvyl/Worldcat profile does not save information for Request. So each time someone places a Request, they must type in all of their information.
Best,
Laura

We are changing our procedures regarding the form called "Letter of Gift -- Gifts in Kind" so that these are given out only by me. If you are in charge of a Service Desk, please recycle any copies of that form that you may have.
Our simplified instructions for staff regarding gift materials are:
- Please refer all questions about possible donations of materials to me.
- If a patron comes to a service desk with a * small number * of items to donate:
1. You may accept the gift, and pass it on to me.
2. Please do not give them a Letter of Gift Form; if they wish one at that time they must speak to me first. If I am not available, they can leave the materials along with their contact information and I will contact them regarding paperwork.
3. Please do not promise that the materials will be added to the collection. Please do not promise that if materials are NOT added to the collection, they will be returned to them. Materials left with the Library are disposed of in a manner that best benefits the Library.
- If a patron comes to a service desk with more than a box of materials, please tell them you cannot accept them and try to reach me so that I can evaluate the offered materials.

Hi all,
Some portions of the collection moved early--the oversize collection has
already moved, and the first couple ranges of the M section have moved. If
patrons come to you looking for items in those sections, we can have them
paged. You can reach Hallett movers at either of the following numbers to
have items paged: 9-2929 or 708.259.8979.
Temporary signs are being posted which will direct patrons to the Circulation Desk for assistance in obtaining these items.
Thanks,
Sarah

Library's mobile site
From Sue Perry:
We're happy to announce the mobile library website is live and ready for testing at http://m.library.ucsc.edu. We'll release the address to the public with a news item later this week.
Note this site is a limited version of the full library site, with a few menu options for tasks and information commonly sought by mobile users. We've tested it on several iPhones and Droids but we don't have access to the full plethora of mobile devices and operating systems out there, so please try it out and let us know what you think using the feedback link in the menu.

Dropped wireless connections on laptops
For the past week+ CNS has been seeing laptops with dropped cruznet wireless connections. Here are directions for what to do depending on whether it is a University owned or personally owned device.
If the device is a checkout laptop or iPad, try rebooting the device (making sure they have saved their files to external media)
if that does not solve it put in an ITR ticket and mark the machine out of order.
If the device is a patron owned machine, please have them open up an ITR ticket by emailing help@ucsc.edu or calling 459-4357
it would be good if they could include their CruzID and their computer's MAC address. (how to get MAC, http://www.tvcc.cc/ISS/Find-MAC-Address.cfm)
So far this behavior has been seen at both McHenry and at S&E. The networking people really need tickets for this issue to be able to troubleshoot and resolve it.
Thanks,
Frank

Students in Dan Scripture's Writing 2 course on the Vietnam Conflict era need to look at contemporary advertisements in magazines from a year of their choice during that period (1965 to 1975).
The following list of the general-interest titles (along with their call numbers, locations, and relevant years held) the library holds either in print, or to which (in one case) there is full-content access on-line, may prove useful.

Law books in the Ref collection
The designation REF LAW has been removed from Cruzcat, it is no longer a separate location.
Now that the law books in the McH Ref collection are arranged in call number order in the Ref stacks, it's no longer necessary to have a separate location for them. The records have been updated in Cruzcat, and Preservation is working to relabel volumes in the Ref stacks.

UCSC employee payroll data
There has been recent interest in employee payroll data for UC and UCSC. As a reminder, this information is available on disc and kept in Reserves at McHenry. To locate the call number, search for "UCSC" as the course name on the Course Reserves search page. Items are listed alphabetically. The relevant title is "UC Employee Payroll Data Disc." Discs are available for 2005 - 2009. The call number for the most recent data, 2009, is UCSC.1056.
Online versions of both system-wide and UCSC data are also available from the Sacramento Bee and the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

Coca cola taste tests
Some students from a psych class at Cabrillo college have come in looking for articles about taste test experiments involving colas (coke and pepsi). PsycInfo had a number of articles, including experiments from 1948.
They are working in groups of 4, and there are 6 or 7 groups. Their paper is due Wednesday.
In PsycInfo use the descriptor "Taste Perception" and KW cola to find 18 relevant scholarly articles. They need to pick the best five for the assignment.
Laura also discovered 14 articles in ASC using SU cola and SU evaluation

BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill resource
In case people are still getting questions about the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, I wanted to let you know that we recently received the official report to the president: Deep Water: The Gulf Oil Disaster and the Future of Offshore Drilling (http://cruzcat.ucsc.edu/record=b3539867~S5) and the accompanying recommendations (http://cruzcat.ucsc.edu/record=b3539868~S5).
I also wanted to share this Deepwater subject guide created by the Gov Docs librarian at MSU: http://guides.library.msstate.edu/content.php?pid=136282&sid=1167503
And a reminder about the bibliography link that Cynthia sent out back in May:

Cruznet issues
If you have a patron who cannot connect to Cruznet wireless (no page will load, they cannot get an IP address) and/or they are getting logged off repeatedly please put in a ticket.
-Include the person's name and their MAC address. Here is a website on how to find the mac address of common operating systems, http://www.wikihow.com/Find-the-MAC-Address-of-Your-Computer, and Apple iOS devices http://osxdaily.com/2010/08/05/find-iphone-mac-address/.
-The CNS help desk can also put in the ticket and has information on how to get the MAC address.
Thanks,
Frank Dang

Student survey publicity
You may notice small thin strips attached to our public stations on the 2nd floor at McH publicizing a student survey. The survey is sponsored by UCSC office of Institutional Research and is part of a statewide survey of students regarding class and lecture size. The survey closes on Feb 10th, at which time these strips will be removed.
The strips say: "Get heard. Take the class and lecture availability student survey @ www.uc-class.org. For a chance to win Nite Owl cookies"
Thanks,
Lucia

Math placement exam study guide questions
If students come to the McHenry Ref Desk asking for the math placement exam study guide, you can refer to this page on the Undergraduate Affairs site to explain what we have. Neither library has exactly that for this test, but S&E does have a textbook and an elementary algebra outline with some practice problems. McHenry has a set of videos put together by a UCSC professor that reviews pre-calculus. What seems to help them most is the bottom link for the practice exam.

Placing holds on Reserves material
A question that comes up often at the desk and on Ask A Librarian is how can a patron place a hold ahead of time on a book that is on Reserve. A patron can place a hold up to a day in advance on a Reserve item, but only in person. They can also take a Reserve item out overnight if they place a hold 2.5 hours before we close in person (so for example 9:30pm for M-Th) and then it has to be back 1 hour after we open the next day.

Canon printer/copier in the Interlibrary Loan Student Room
Hi,
Toward the end of the day on Monday, 1/10/11, the color printer/copier in the ILL student room was having trouble. We have placed a service call and at this point have turned off the machine in anticipation of tomorrow morning's power outage. I will send a message when this machine is up and running again.

Ref weeding project
I wanted to catch you up on a few things having to do with the McHenry Ref weeding project.
1. There are about 15 book trucks lined up along the back wall/fence labeled Ref Weeding Project Jan 2011. These are the trucks we'll be using for the pull
2. The two SAIV students (one of whom started working on it today) will be doing the pull (under my guidance) and the plan is to have this project done by the end of Jan of this year.
If you have any questions about how this is going please let me know.
Many thanks.
-- Molly
